The "Unexplainable": How the Muggles Got It Wrong

By Nichole Taylor

For centuries, our non-magical brethren have encountered many strange, unexplainable events. In early civilizations, these events were written off in the minds of Muggles as "the doin's of God," thus closing the matter. As Muggle intelligence and knowledge grew, God was no longer a reasonable, logical explanation for the unknown. Muggles from the Enlightenment to the present happily managed to Confund themselves with ideas such as "Unidentified Flying Objects" (UFOs) and many other silly notions as the logical, most reasonable answers to the world's astounding events.

Little do they know that wizards, in fact, caused their mysteries in history!

Take for examples the pyramids in Egypt and the ancient realm of the Aztecs. Muggle archaeologists have noted that the great feats of engineering would be impossible with their current form of technology. (For those unfamiliar with Muggle terms, "technology" is their form of magic, but it has to rely on "machines" and "electricity." For more information, please consult a Muggle dictionary.) These Muggles believe that ancient Egyptians toiled in hard labor for over twenty years to build the massive stone tombs, yet to this day they cannot figure out how it was accomplished. Adding to the mystery, the three pyramids are located in the center point of all the continents, splitting the globe into four equal parts. Also, the Muggle longest land meridian and parallel lines cross directly where the pyramids stand.

One group of Muggles believe that UFOs are responsible not only for the creation of the pyramids, but many other things as well. Whenever something cannot be explained, UFOs are usually blamed. In Muggle slang, UFOs usually relate to "aliens" or life from planets in the solar system other than Earth, or beings from other solar systems. Many Muggles claim to see "spaceships." The Muggle authorities have millions of still photos and moving pictures ("video") documenting their claims. Many vivid reports of these beings have been reported in newspapers and other forms of Muggle media. They are described as humanoid, but with big heads and large eyes.

Silly Muggles! The pyramids were actually built by wizards. Many of these ancient tombs are filled with treasure and, thanks to the hard work of the Gringott's Curse-Breakers, the ancient artifacts are being "discovered" (though they still manage to end up in Muggle museums).

UFOs can also be explained. Many wizards, having grown tired of pulling pranks on each other, find an unsuspecting Muggle (usually an older one) and Confund the victim into believing he or she has seen a UFO. At this time, no action on behalf of the Ministry of Magic has been taken to stop the pranksters; for, as a Ministry spokesperson claimed, "It's just good, clean fun. I mean, no Muggles are harmed; in fact, they like it."

These are just two examples of how incorrect Muggles' perceptions are about the world in which they live. However, you have to give Muggles credit for coming up with clever alternatives. In a world without magic, how could they have thought of anything else?
