As much as I love The Twilight Saga — books and movies — I was thrilled when I got news of the spoof movie Vampires Suck. In the official trailer, it says "From the guys who couldn't sit through another vampire movie". But I must say, being made by people who say they hate the original movies, this movie hits the exact right spots to make fun of — and it's extremely well done.
Basically every name in this movie is changed, except for Edward and Jacob. Which is understandable, because how else would they have been able to make fun of Twilight fangirls? But other than that, the movie has a very high likeness to the original movies Twilight and New Moon, which they have put together in this spoof movie.
Here's a short synopsis: Becca is new in town. She has come to stay with her father Frank, who is the Chief of the Police in Sporks, Washington. It is a very strange town where everyone seems to be fascinated by vampires at the moment. Then she meets the even weirder Edward Sullen at school, and they are drawn to each other. Three bad vampires kill a fisherman, and the Indian boy Jacob warns Becca not to be with Edward. Becca confronts Edward about what he really is. The plot thickens....
The movie is really well-made. Many of the scenes closely resemble the scenes in the original movies. They have picked out the key plots, key lines, and key places, and they have re-created them — with a twist of course. I laughed out loud at so many things! Jacob shapeshifting into a chihuahua, and chasing cats all the time. The wolf pack dancing to "It's Raining Men". Jeremiah (Jasper) looking at Becca as if she was a hamburger. And through the whole movie they're playing with words and cross-referencing to other famous people, TV-series or things. To get all the jokes I think you should be somewhat familiar with the gossip in the celebrity world, but even if you don't know that Taylor Swift dated Taylor Lautner (the "real" Jacob), or that the female bad vampire was re-cast for the third Twilight movie, Vampires Suck is still a funny movie worth watching!
Most of the characters have a strong resemblance to the original characters, both in looks and personality and in how they move, behave and talk. I even heard a girl beside me in the cinema whispering to her friend "Is that the real James or is it someone else?" Now, I could tell right away that it was someone else. But when it comes to Edward and Becca, I was amazed. These two were not identical twins of the originals, but wow, they were close! And mainly because they managed to capture everything that characterizes Edward and Bella — and to exaggerate it perfectly. Like Becca always putting her hair back behind her ear, blinking too much, constantly nodding her head in all directions. And Edward with that weird smile of his, staring with wide-open eyes, looking generally stuck-up.
I really enjoyed watching Vampires Suck. It gave me a good laugh! But even though I do recommend it to Twilight-lovers and Twilight-haters alike, a word of warning: it contains a lot of harsh language and swearing, sexual content and nudity, and violence that some might find sickening. But if you're okay with that (and you're old enough — that is, teens and older), go ahead and watch it!
