Book Review: The Power of Now
by Tarma Black
Everyone dies. No matter how good you are, how wise you are or how bad you are and terrible, everyone dies. The thing is — do "you," the real person, die? Or, is it a temporary semblance of who you think you are that vanishes into nothing, leaving the body to return to the earth (from where you borrowed it), and you are alive, whole and, strangely, joyful and peaceful.
Eckhart Tolle was a normal, extremely intelligent, deeply unhappy person in his late 20s. Then he experienced an event of utmost importance that enabled him to discover and recognize the beauty of Life. His whole experience of Life changed.
His book, The Power of Now, points with words at things that are beyond the limited grasp of intellect. He points out clearly and concisely ways to get out of the rut of unhappiness and misery. He shows how those ruts became established as "fact" or "truth" and then (devastating to ego/intellect control), clearly shows how it is all false, a tissue of lies.
This is a very seductive and addictive tissue of lies, truth. But one can break addictions, one can see clearly a seductive pattern, or mind structure, for what it is, and one can be free of it and remember what is true and real.
There is a way out of suffering and into peace. Mr. Tolle points this out with words that are simple and profound.
I feel very fortunate that Wastl and I had read The Power of Now. I had been reading it again at the start of 2009. It seemed a good thing to do. When Wastl became ill, we both practiced what Mr. Tolle talked about, and rediscovered the aliveness "within" the form. The aliveness which continues on even when the body, the form, is no more. That Life which allows the body to have its form and function continues. And we knew, beyond any possible doubts that ego/intellect might throw at us, that this Life is what we truly am and intellect is something we use. We knew this because we experienced the felt oneness with all of Life and knew it to be true. otoharu
