Divination in Magic and Muggle Realms

by Zoki Phantom

"Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, tell me who is the prettiest of them all?" And the mirror showed the witch my image. Er, I mean it showed her her reflection.

That is a way of seeing the present, but the process is very similar with seeing the future as well. Only wizards would use a crystal ball in this same situation. Muggles, although obviously not as good as magical folk in Divination, use a crystal ball as well. But while we magical folk simply use the crystal ball to look into the future in general, muggles often use it only to look into someone's future — usually the future of the one who pays them. How unethical, taking money from people to tell them their future! They even do the same with the other types of future-seeing too!

And while we use the tea leaves from drinks as one of our main ways of seeing the future, muggles use another drink called "coffee." Tea is used only on rare occasions, by some older seers. However, if looking at both drinks' residue after someone drinks them, it can easily be noticed that the tea leaves are more accurate since they form shapes more easily than coffee grounds.

Cartomancy is present in both Divinations as well. In the wizarding world a special deck of cards is used, while the muggles use an ordinary deck that they use for playing games. The only similarities are that both decks are divided in the same two colors, red and black, and the same four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs.

Another form of Divination that both sides use is palmistry. It's the reading of the future from someone's hand, in the lines on the hand, the size and form of the hand, the shape of the fingers and the fingernails are all important. Both wizards and muggles have the exact same way of future seeing when it comes to palmistry.

Astrology is quite similar as well. Muggles have the same zodiac signs and the same way of reading future by the planets' position. However, muggles use second zodiac signs as well. Those are given by the hour of birth. It's as if they're not sure in their reading with one sign, so they use two.

Basically, Divination is very similar in both worlds, there are just some minor differences. However, there's a huge difference when it comes to quality and purpose. Wizards and witches are far more qualified, skilled and accurate with Divination, and they don't read futures for money (in general), while with muggles it's vice versa.
