Movie Review: Bedtime Stories

by Jenna Hathaway

Everyone knows those stories parents tell their children before bedtime. But, all of them have always been fairy tales and things that would never happen in real life. What if someday someone finds out their bedtime stories come true? Must be a pretty handy skill to have, I'd imagine. However, it's not nearly that simple.

Bedtime Stories begins with Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler), the son of Marty Bronson — owner of a modest motel who eventually had to sell it because he couldn't afford to continue managing it any longer. The motel becomes a big and luxurious hotel, and even though the new owner promised that Skeeter will become manager of the new hotel once he has grown up and worked hard in it, the promise is soon forgotten. Skeeter becomes a janitor/handyman and has stayed that way for years. And, eventually Skeeter's hope to ever become the manager is shattered when the new owner decides to give that position to his future son-in-law instead.

Meanwhile, Skeeter's sister is going out of town to get a job interview and asks him to babysit her children. That is when the real magic begins. Skeeter starts telling the children some bedtime stories, and soon he finds them coming true in his real life. He thinks at first that whatever story he comes up with will come true, but it turns out the magic lies in the children's stories. It is the parts that they come up with and fill in that do come true, so now Skeeter has to somehow steer them in the right direction to make their stories come true and eventually improve his mediocre life.

Overall, the story is fairly endearing, the kids are especially entertaining, and of course you can't forget the cute bug-eyed guinea pig Bugsy, which is just priceless. The plot is not stellar but funny enough, managing to make you feel all warm and fuzzy at the end of the day. If you're stuck inside on a rainy day and just want something light to watch, I'd recommend this movie to entertain you for a fun-filled two hours.
