The Kingdom Quidditch 'Fruit Bowl' tournament
After an unsuccessful attempt to run this interesting event during the fun Hufflepuff Carnival, the DoHGaS enlisted the help of two of the most active sprouts in the house, and set up the Fruit Bowl to run over the summer months. When it came to looking for someone to take up the challenge of running this event, Talya Mamush and Gwen Owens were the obvious choices. Both are Sprouts, and so are there to help out anyway, and both are intrinsically linked to Quidditch within Hufflepuff, as well as being two of the most active students on IRC.
With the use of a set of questions full of Hufflepuff trivia, old and new, a channel was set up and a bot installed for people to practice with. The students were already getting into it by this point, with many making regular visits to the practice room to test and improve their HuffleKnowledge. Names were being put forth in the Kingdom areas on the forum, and team line ups considered.
On Saturday, August 7th, the first Fruit Bowl was contested. The first match saw the Silver Starfruit against the Purple Pineapples. A small team of Kelda Maxwell, Kai Clearwood, Arwen Wood and Talya Mamush for the Starfruit took on a Pineapples team of Avi Cohen, Prof Jamsey, Elyranna Reginhart, Cosmo Brown, Ceit Uiseag and Julia Weflynn.
The HuffleQuaffle was thrown back and forth with great speed and skill, current HuffTrivia mixed with the old to provide the newer Badgers with what Cosmo Brown (PP-Beater) described as a "bit of a Hufflepuff history lesson in the form of a trivia game." Of course, it was all right for some, having so many graphical achievements to her name that the Queen of the Wizarding Times herself was in fact the answer to a number of questions.
From a spectator's point of view (even if I was making myself at home in the PP team room) the game was a fast and furious display of talent, and very enjoyable to watch. The Pineapples defeated the Starfruit by 50 to 40 with four goals each from Avi and Kai, and the fifth Pineapple goal from the hands of Prof Jamsey. After such a great start, it was no surprise to see that the remaining two matches were equally as enjoyable.
An unchanged Pineapples side now faced Gwen 'The Insane' alongside Rilla White, Jessamyn Logan, Jared Weasley, Prof Olivia and Emma Pacifica. The Khaki Kumquats swiftly opened the scoring, but after Jess put the HuffleQuaffle through the hoops, it was the 'Insane One' who dominated, slamming in the remaining seven goals for her side. Another four goals from Avi, and two from Prof Jamsey weren't quite enough to save the Pineapples, and they went away with one win, one loss, with this one at 80-60.
The goal rush continued into the last match, as Gwen and Talya showed their talents on the pitch, racking up 10 and 9 respectively for their Kingdoms. A goal apiece for Prof Olivia and Keeper/Chaser Emma rounded out the scoring at 120-90 in favour of the Kumquats, as newcomer Rachel Cherokee failed to make her mark for the Starfruit, thanks to a fine display of Keeping. Two impressive performances meant that the Kumquats took home the first ever Fruit Bowl Trophy, with the Starfruit in second place and the Pineapples, after a good start, in third position (placings deciding on number of goals scored).
The tournament was the first Socks-scoring opportunity of the new HOL year, and Most Valuable Player awards were also given out. With one MVP per team gaining 10 individual socks, along with the team socks for the tournament, last year's Sock-Monster, Cosmo Brown, made an early start for the Pineapples. Her devastating assault on the Pineapple and Starfruit defences meant that Gwen Owens took the MVP award for the Kumquats, and an admirable performance in both matches led Kai Clearwood to the Starfruit award. Both Talya and Gwen also received extra socks for organising the tournament.
As for another Fruit Bowl this year, well, the jury is still out, but I would say there's a good chance we'll see it as a regular challenge... "I'd be glad if it was run again," says Talya, "it was a lot of fun both to organise and play." As for the others? "Do you even need to ask?" exclaims Cosmo, "It definitely should be done again with new trivia. Yearly would be fun; it would give us enough time to build up more things to make questions about. Now, where can I sign up for next year's games? :D"
"It's REALLY REALLY REALLY FUN (Not to mention you get to find out how much people really know about you and you can see how fast you can actually type your own name *g*)" adds Rachel Cherokee, "I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!!" Can we all say 'eager?' *g*
