The Sky Map and the Twins

Written by Zoki Phantom

It happened one dark and cold December night, when the cry of two twin babies in a warm home was turned into the cry of two twin babies in old, cold, and different orphanages. You would think the parents are cruel and don't love their kids to abandon them so, and probably you would come up with and say many curses to them, although you have no idea who they are, where they are, or why they left their children.

That's why it's not really good to judge at first sight because this wasn't the case of cruel parents, this was the case of the poor and lone mother that was supposed to be taking care of the kids alone, without her husband that left her because of the same reason: she couldn't find a job — she had her left arm broken in a car crash, so she couldn't work.

She always loved children, and always wanted to have some, but not under these circumstances. She wanted to make them happy and to give them everything they needed, but she knew she wouldn't be able to get enough money even for buying proper food, clothes, diapers, and she couldn't even dream about all the other things babies need to be happy and to live a normal life. So, she decided to give the girl to the nearby orphanage so she could see her from time to time, while she gave the boy to the orphanage less close to the village, since she knew that was a more strict orphanage and she wanted her son to grow up into a good and strong boy.

She was very sad once she left them, but she knew she had no choice. She was just hoping that she'd be able to find a decent job and save some money. For, then, when they got out of the orphanages after many years and she could buy them everything they wanted, she would tell them the truth, and they would forgive her for her act of desperation. But, as the years came and went, her wish to hug them, to kiss them on the forehead, and to tell them she loved them was too big, and she couldn't wait that many years; so, on their 15th birthday, she send them each a letter that said:

Dear children,
I just want to tell you that I didn't leave you because I don't love you. Quite the contrary, I had to leave you just because I love you both so much! I had an injury and your father left me, and because of the same injury I couldn't get a job, so being all on my own without a job, I knew I couldn't take care of you two. I wanted you to have everything you want, and be treated as a prince and princess, because you deserve that. I know that the places where you are right now are not castles and not places that a prince and princess would be, but that is still better than my home, and I just wanted the best for you.

You probably hate me or don't want to see me now, but I don't care, because I love you both so much that I can almost feel you next to me when I think about you. If you ever decide to put anger aside, and want to forgive me about this desperate act, I have included something in the letter that will help you find me.

It's a sky map. Yes, it looks like an empty parchment, but once you are 18 years old, just take the parchment in your hand and wish that you can go back home, and it will open. It will show the exact image that you can see on the sky, with the stars and the moon, or the sun or the clouds, it could be anything. But it will have a small sign, too, and that is the most important part of it. The sign will point to a certain place, and you have to follow it. Just walk in that direction and once you get there, the sign will point to the sky element that's above you.

Hope you will understand, and forgive me some day,
Your mom.

A typical child would just get angry after reading this letter, and rip apart both the letter and the map. But, Chiarra and Santos weren't that type of child. They understood what their mother must have gone through, and decided to search for her and tell her they forgive her. They were also hoping that they, too, would meet, since by the "Dear children" they understood that they had at least one sibling. It's strange how they didn't know each other but still had pretty much the same thoughts. They both left the orphanages on the same day, and they were making pretty much the same progress with the map, and after a few weeks both of them managed to get to their mother's house, both at the same time. But both of them were afraid to enter, so they just stood outside and looked at the windows: Chiarra from one side of the house, Santos from the other.

They probably would have stayed there for awhile if their mother hadn't come out on the balcony and notice them.

She shrieked, put her hands on her mouth, and just stared at both of them, who now seemed to notice each other too. Still shocked, they moved closer to each other slowly and then hugged very tightly, with tears raining from the depths of their eyes. Their mother joined the group hug as soon as she got down. They stood like that for a while, just hugging and crying, without even saying a word. But they understood each other perfectly, as if the tears and the touch was their way of communicating.

Later they went inside the house, where they talked all night long, still with the tears as a company. The beauty of the fire in the fireplace, or the beauty of the sky that also showed up on the two sky maps is not even close to how beautiful this family looked now, and how they looked even more joyful in the future.
