Review: Whip It
With cooler fall weather seeping into our world I find myself seeking the comforts of the indoors. On a recently blustery Sunday afternoon I had the pleasure of finding a warm comfortable chair in a local movie theater. There I had the further pleasure of watching the movie Whip It!
Whip It is about a young girl named Bliss from a tiny town in Texas. Her mother has her competing in pageants, but Bliss wants to pursue other interests. When she finds a flier for roller derby tryouts, her world is turned upside down. The story follows Bliss as she tries something new and the ups and downs she experiences along the way. I won't give away too much of the movie, but you may leave thinking up a roller derby name of your own and creating the attitude to go with it.
I found this movie fun, touching and a glimpse into a world I have only seen from the sidelines. The tension between Bliss, her family, co-workers, and her roller derby life really builds up to a great ending. The movie can get a bit corny at parts, but overall it was an enjoyable flick filled with laughter, tears, a food fight, and some big purple bruises that were earned along the way.
If you are looking for two hours of fun and lighthearted entertainment, then I think you will enjoy seeing Whip It. You may even find yourself wanting to strap on your own set of skates!
