Chapter 2 — The Mysterious Marbulus

There was that name again. Marbulus. It seemed to be the latest news in the Hufflepuff Common Room. Only when Rachel and the other first years received their schedules did the whispering become clear.

So, he's a Charms professor. Big deal.

But all throughout the day, Rachel couldn't stop wondering if there was something behind this Charms professor. She was about to find out.

Rachel sat down at the back of the classroom. The children around her would chatter excitedly — until a figure came into the room. They all fell silent.

Professor Vincent Marbulus looked cheery enough, with a round stomach and bright cheeks. But judging by the way the students acted as if they were face-to-face with a poisonous snake, Rachel thought otherwise.

With a flick of his wand, Marbulus wrote on the board:

Professor Vincent Marbulus
Charms
Lesson One — The History of Charms

And then, ...

Charms is the practice of magic that is not made with potions or....

Professor Marbulus did not like to talk.

Looking at Vikki's paper, Rachel thought that they were supposed to be copying down everything that was appearing on the board. But by then, the class was up to ...

Charms without wands are possible,
though only some specific charms such as the....

So she decided to just copy from Vikki.

At the end of class, Rachel turned in her paper. The moment she looked into Marbulus' eyes, she knew she was in trouble.

Ms. Garmens

... appeared on the board.

You have detention this Friday at seven o'clock.

"Why?" she demanded. "What did I do?"

The professor didn't speak, but the message on the board was underlined.

"Why? Tell me why!"

Marbulus shook his head.

"If you won't tell me why, then I won't go!"

And Rachel stormed out of the classroom, quite sure that she would never set foot in Vincent Marbulus' office.

That was her mistake.
