Dear Diary

I found you! I found you! Where have you been? The last time I wrote in you I'd been to Diagon Alley and was going to go to the train station the next week, to go to Hogwarts. Then you disappeared! Oh, I know what happened; I must have packed you in the trunk with all my school books when I was sorting through my school books that night. Well, I've lots of time now on this train trip, I guess. I can write what has happened up to now.

Last I'd wrote I'd gone to Diagon Alley shopping with Alana and got Scalawag. She is such a dear; even mom thinks that she is cute and she is more a dog person than a cat person. It's so strange, too, because you'd think she knew to go up to her and mew and be cute and adorable. So dad and mom and Alana and Scalawag and me all went to the train station. You should have seen mom's face when Alana disappeared through the barrier. Alana was so cool; she just sort of casually leaned against it and *poof*. Fortunately, dad was standing in back of mom so when she kind of slumped down he held her up for a few moments. He showed me how to push my trolley, which was all loaded down with my trunk and Scalawag's basket and stuff, through the barrier.

Mom absolutely refused to go through it and so dad hugged me goodbye there, he didn't want to leave mom. He and Alana kind of figured mom wouldn't want to go through. I'm so glad that mom and Alana have turned out to be friends, by the way, because she's been over at home a lot recently. She and dad have told stories about Hogwarts, funny things, so that mom is gradually getting used to the idea that her daughter is a witch. Anyway, like I was saying, Alana was waiting for me on the other

side. She helped me load my trunk onto the train and kept me from tripping over things. It was so weird to see other kids my age and older and they are all wizards and witches! I felt really dumb so just was real quiet and found an empty compartment towards the end of the train. Alana hugged me goodbye and gave me a sugar quill! I'm sucking on it as I write this. I let Scalawag out of her basket and she is exploring the compartment.

Oh! What fun, a witch with a trolley just went by and I bought some candy! She thought Scalawag was the cutest thing, and let me have a cauldron cake for free in addition to the things I bought. Wizard money sure is strange, when I'm used to - - this is hard to say, *Muggle* money. I need to remember to call regular people "Muggles" now I guess. There is so much for me to remember!

I'm putting this in at the last minute. Right after the witch came by and I got really neat candy, a girl came into my compartment. She asked if she could stay because where she had been was kind of messy since some boys evidently exploded something. I said 'sure' and so we had a good time. Her name is Amy and she's from a family living in the Muggle world, too, her dad is the Muggle though and her mom is a witch. Her dad knew about it all along, though, and knew Amy'd be going to Hogwarts. Well, I need to finish here and put you in my trunk, Diary, and put on my black robes. This is so exciting, I'm surprised that I can read my writing! Next time I write in you, I'll have been Sorted and a real student at Hogwarts!
