Connemara ponies are a native breed, and like most native breeds, are not only good but excellent for conservation grazing. Their teeth are positioned in a way that allows them to graze close to the ground, so are very suited to sites where short swards are needed, for e.g. mountains and coastal breeding habitats. If the site of grazing is large enough to allow for a wide area of grazing, they leave a mosaic of habitat because of them being selective grazers. They will move through mature heather, bracken, and gorse thus effectively pushing back regrowth and creating tracks for other animals like sheep and goat to be able to graze.
