  1. When Fels proposed us doing countries of the world, for this year in Wonders of the World, I immediately thought of Finland, because of Monty Python. What? You've not heart of "Finland, Finland, Finland" sung by Michael Palin? Oh. Okay .... Well, maybe you have seen pictures of the Northern Lights in Finland? The best time, according to some, to see the Aurora Borealis in Finland is from December to March. You might even watch them in comfort -- "In Finland, you can view nature's most spectacular light show, the Aurora Borealis, from purpose-built spaces like glass huts and luxury suites. Did you know that the Northern Lights are visible roughly 200 nights a year in Finnish Lapland?" Even in the summer, though, with the snow gone, the countryside is so wild, so beautiful ... Welcome to Wonders of the World - and Finland! We'll have a great time exploring the sights and sounds and magic of this wonderful country.

  2. Oh we (meaning me and Louis and our children) go on holiday every year. Our first holiday was just a year into dating because my parents invited him over (they live in Canada and we in England). Ever since we go to Canada every year. This year we're going to be in several places. In April we went to Canada to visit my parents for a week, then we went to Southend-on-Sea for a week - it was truly lovely on the beach. Then we went to Cardiff (capital of Wales) for a weekend - absolutely splendid it was. Then we went to Slough for a day to just walk around and see how this town looks like. This is not the yet of the whole thing though - on 12th September we are going to Madrid and then we are going to see Liverpool shortly after we'd come back. And then in October we are going to Prague (Czech Republic) for a few days and from there we will take a train to Poland to visit Lou's grandparents and then home. Hopefully that would be the end of travelling for this year! I remember our first trip to Canada together. Louis has pretty much never been abroad. He moved to the UK at a young age, and so for him going to Poland and back to the UK doesn't count as going 'abroad'. He was shocked to see how huge the plane to Canada is (14h flight so much bigger than for a 2h flight). Then he was stunned at the cultural differences and the fact that so many people were speaking French and English. He was also in love with all the streets and shops and how different they are from the ones back home in London. But now, I guess he is used to Canada.

  8. The first time I went abroad was what I consider my actual holiday. I did go on holiday in Poland but it was nothing as special because there was nothing to see. The first trip abroad was to London. I actually ended up moving here. The trip to London was more of an organizational one as my foster guardian took me here so I could see everything, whilst he was organizing a flat for us to move in after the adoption would have been finalized. The trip lasted a week but I was happy anyway. I did not get to try much of the English food during that week. My father bought me some ice cream as well as pudding and candy. We did however went to a few places to look at flats. I did not really care about the flats itself but rather focused on observing the area. The city was way more bigger than I originally thought. I also realised that I won't be able to get a flat with the London Eye or Big Ben outside my window. There are two reasons as to why. 1. There are no flats opposite the Big Ben and London Eye - just office buildings. We did go on a Hop On Hop Off bus, from which I saw London Eye and Big Ben for the first time ever. This was a very emotional moment for me since going to London was a big dream of mine at the time (now of course, seeing Big Ben is nothing emotional for me, rather boring really). Since then, I have seen many more attractions in London and been to several museums. We have not been yet to some smaller museums but all the big ones, such as Natural History Museum or the Science Museum.

  12. This year I've decided to take Advanced Herbology, Astrological Road Trip, Muggle Studies: Hidden Powers I, Parseltongue: A Challenging Introduction, and Philosophy in Harry Potter. These go along with trying to get the rest of my OWLs all sorted before I begin NEWTs *shivers* I don't know if I would say any of these would be easier than any other, but I will say Parseltongue is not lying about being a challenging class! I've just finished up my first assignment and made sure to triple check my answers and pronunciation before I felt confident sending it off. So far I've only completed a few assignments, so I'd like to get more of a head start before I start digging into OWLs. Luckily I finished my Ancient Runes OWL last year, so I don't need to start Arithmancy until October. I am also teaching Magical Beings and History of Hogwarts: The Founders this term. I'd love to create a new class, but I have a feeling that will have to wait until after this year.

  13. At the moment, most of the traveling we do is for concerts. Most recently, we traveled to Chicago where we saw Modern Talking perform at the Copernicus Center. There aren't a ton of acts we'll travel to see, so it was pretty fun to drive there. The concert was fantastic and we had a nice time traveling around the city. We stayed a bit north of the city proper, but we hit up the spots we wanted to see. It was the first time that I'd been inside the Art Institute of Chicago which was beautiful. We also made sure to get our proper Chicago hot dogs. Next up, we're actually traveling to another concert in October (both of these were shows we've had tickets to for two years that have been postponed multiple times).

  15. Had an overnight with my friends in June to see New Kids On The Block. I had the best seats I ever had for a concert. There was Rick Ashley, Envouge, Salt n Peppa, Naughty By Nature. Gryff McIntyre. I had so much fun! Really wanted to do more but I have health conditions that prevented me from doing a lot. I became a Goddess Mother to my friend's daughter this year. I love this girl to bits! My bearded dragons are doing wonderful. Diva turned 7 in July. Rebel is about to be 7 this month! I might have a seizure disorder I'm doing an 8 hour EEG to see if my brain glitches as I call it. Hopefully I can get my application to the YMCA done so I can get financial help to go. They just got done with a new Y and they have amazing pools!!

  17. I have never really been on a vacation. It's hard to do when it's just my mom and four younger sisters. The youngest just turned 4 and the next oldest just turned 12 to give you an idea of how crazy a vacation would be with my family. But I think that I would like to go to Alaska during the periods of the midnight sun and the polar night. I would love to see that at some point as well as the aurora borealis. Another vacation would be to Space Camp. I have gone twice with Girl Scouts, and I'm already signed up to go next summer for the advanced space academy, and I can't wait! 2023 cannot get here soon enough!

  18. As always, my family and my sister in law's family and I went to Wells Beach, Maine. A week away to the ocean is what I always look forward to. We rent a beach house that is just a 2 minute walk to the beach. This year we had a beautiful week weather wise. Last year was cool and rainy, this year the sun was out every day, high in the 90's... absolutely perfect beach weather. We had a quiet week, beach time by 10:00am, lunch around 1:00pm, back to the beach till 4:00pm, then home to start dinner. And start dinner some nights was ordering out. We cooked at home mostly this year rather than eating out. We had our niece (4 years old)and nephew (5 years old) and found it's easier to eat at home. Though we did go to the Food Trucks one night, and believe it or not, they had the best lobster rolls we had that week. Our big adventure for the week was going on a whale watch. Again, it was a beautiful day to be out on the water. We were lucky to see 4 whales. You just don't realize the size and grace of them until you get to see them close up. In October, my daughters, my sister in law, my niece and her daughter (the 4 year old) are going back up for our annual Girl's Weekend. Then in December, my husband and I are going back for Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude.

  19. OUT OF CHARACTER: I did see the northern lights in late March 2012 in exactly the country featured in this Wonders of the World. But since I was looking from an urban setting, I only saw a single streak off in the distance; nothing like this puzzle!

  20. Starting in September, every month we will bring you activities which focus on some of the countries that members of Hufflepuff and HOL are from. It will be like a little tour around the world without leaving your couch or chair. The theme, either a specific area will change from month to month and activities will be varied, from written items (like creating a bucket list) to jigsaws to travel brochures to puzzles. Specifics of activities will range from focusing on animals and plants which live in our 'themed place' to describing if there are any wizarding schools and what they specialize in. Each week will bring a new challenge -- where you can enjoy yourself and earn Diamonds! All items from each week will be due at the end of the month, so if you join up late you may still participate in all the activities for the month. Remember to click to follow this Forum so that you receive updates whenever a new Activity is posted. Thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoy Wonders of the World. If for accessibility reasons you can't complete any of the activities, please just let me know and an alternative can be worked out – we might give you something to research and write up about, but we will come up with an alternative!

  23. I did not forget everyone, I just have been so overwhelmed with grandkids, doctors appointments and preparing for the upcoming tax season that I just have not had the time to put anything together. I am going to post double this month so you can earn your diamonds for August and extra diamonds for September! **Everything is going to be for September instead of August/September. You have double the activities to make up for the lack of August activities. Sorry for any confusion!** Here we go! Discussion #1 It is August now and summer for the most part will be coming to an end. I had hoped to do some traveling in late spring or early summer, but it just didn’t work out. I ended up spending my summer watching my younger grandson mostly, but I’ve had the older one also from time to time. Anyway, my discussion topic is this, if you have taken a vacation recently or at all ever? Where did you go and what did you do? Or if you have never taken a vacation where would you like to go, why and what would you do there? Each post must be at least 100 words, you can start a new post or respond to someone else’s. For each 100 words you will receive 10 Diamonds! Maximum number of 30! Of course, you are welcome to submit more if you like! You have until September 30th to submit your post!

  25. I had several places I wanted to visit this summer but didn't manage to visit any of them. I had planned a nice long week of camping but that didn't quite work out. Mostly this summer my mother, brother, and I celebrated our togetherness and ate at an average of three different restaurants at least three times per week. We tried all sorts of new places. Our local town has no less than two Mexican restaurants, and then another close town has a third, and we've ranked those, as well as our favorite foods from the menus. So far, our favorite restaurant discovery has been a small, locally owned eatery called Cloud 9 Cafe, located next to a small airport. It's decorated really nice, with the ceiling painted blue and while like clouds, and green walls to appear as if they are grass. The food is excellent! My brother always orders steak no matter where we go if it's on the menu, while I prefer their pork chops, to which they have added Canadian Bacon and cheese. We've all gained a few pounds, but it's been a truly delicious summer!
