My Jedi Journal

Dear Diary,

~Tuesday~

This has been a very strange sort of day. I went to school, same as always, and noticed a whole bunch of owls flying around. "That's weird," I said to myself, but continued walking. Living out in the country and having to walk about one mile to school, it doesn't pay to lolly-gag and look at birds, even if it is a bunch of owls, and it is the morningtime.

The morning passed quickly, but it was boring being in the classes. I had a great time, though, because I was pretending that I was a great wizard, and I used a chopstick that I had from the Chinese-food restaurant and pretended that it was a magic wand. Then I pretended that I was turning the teachers into great big rabbits, and some of the students into frogs or toads.

My best friend, Amelia, came up to me at lunchtime, and she told me I needed to grow up. That I was almost 11 years old, and that only kids did stuff like that. Listen to her--ha! I said to myself. Maybe she isn't my best friend anymore. Maybe I need a new best friend, one that can join with me in my playing.

Something really strange happened after lunch. In the chemistry class, where we learn how things are made, and do basic stuff like making smoke and things like that combining different ingredients (it's only the fifth grade so we don't get to do the REAL interesting stuff), I was wondering what would happen if the smoke turned pink. Because it's not supposed to turn pink, according to the directions.

I got distracted by the sight of an owl flying outside the window, and when I looked back, the smoke was pink! That was really weird! Not only that, the teacher made us evacuate the classroom. He was all nervous, but it turned out to be nothing much.

So, anyway, I walked home. My folks weren't home yet; Dad was probably out with the work crew, and Mom was still in town, most likely. And this huge, absolutely smashing owl came flying at me! It was SO COOL. It came right up to me, and swooped up and dropped an envelope in my hands!

It was some sort of strange paper, too, real heavy, and there was this old-fashioned sort of blob of something, maybe wax, on the outside of the envelope.

It was from some sort of strange school... I'd never heard of it before. But what was so weird is that it was addressed to me!

So I opened it....

.....and my parents came home at the same time, half an hour later.

How am I supposed to tell them that I'm going to a School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Oh, well, I'll find a way.

Tomorrow.

Good-night, Diary.
