Wonders of the World - November 2024 - Architectural Marvels - Machu Picchu

*~*~*~*~*~*

I am utterly fascinated with Machu Picchu.

If you are not familiar with this place, it is a citadel located on a mountain ridge in Peru. Made of gigantic worked blocks of stone, their shapes are not just the regular rectangular forms, of regular stone walls but 'cyclopean stone structures' cut and fitted into multi-angled jigsaw puzzle patterns.

"On one block I was able to count a total of thirty-three angles, every one intermeshed faultlessly with a matching angle on an adjoining block. There were massive polygons and perfect ashlars with razor-sharp edges. There were also natural, unhewn boulders integrated into the overall design at a number of points." 1

It has often been called "The Lost City of the Incas".  Recent discoveries and histories go rather against the 'accepted' theories by the authorities who say that the city could not have been built much before the 15th century. Using studies of the orientation of the buildings with the star formations, and comparing alignments, some scholars have come up with the idea, supported by their computations and with the actual city, that Machu Picchu could be up to 6,000 years old (or older). The native peoples of the area, themselves, have legends which date back thousands of years.  So we have a huge mystery here which some day might be solved.

In the meantime, though .... no matter who or when or how it was built ... Machu Picchu is beautiful to behold.

Here is a little information about the actual site -
