"Christmas was coming. One morning in mid-December, Hogwarts woke to find itself covered in several feet of snow. The lake froze solid and the Weasley twins were punished for bewitching several snowballs so that they followed Quirrell around, bouncing off the back of his turban. The few owls that managed to battle their way through the stormy sky to deliver mail had to be nursed back to health by Hagrid before they could fly off again."

- Wintertime at Hogwarts

Christmas was fast approaching. HOL was getting together in all the common rooms to celebrate with fun activities! Iverian was rushing back and forth down the corridors past all the older students screaming Christmas songs at the top of her lungs. She raced around the corner, on her way to decorate the Gryffindor common room, and almost ran right into Sirius who had a checklist for the Hufflepuff activity. “Whoops, sorry!” she yelled as she raced around him. In the Gryffindor common room, Sky was hanging up decorations. Iverian grabbed some wrapping paper and began to wrap the portraits in it to make them look like presents, much to the portraits anger. In the Ravenclaw common room, the Ravenclaws were carefully drawing up a plan for what the common room was going to look like. The Slytherins were having a competition for who could stack the presents under the tree the nicest and the Hufflepuffs were arranging a beautiful table full of Christmas cookies. Iverian loved HOL during Christmas because there was so much going on!

There was a content silence all around the Hogwarts grounds and castle one early December morning. In the night, snow began to fall and covered everything in a thick, white blanket. Its consistency was just right for any mischief the students might be up to.

After breakfast was served, a swarm of students spilled onto the grounds. The younger students initiated an impromptu inter-house snowball fight, while some of the older ones watched from the side lines, or provided helpful tips for their housemates.

Rubeus Hagrid started defrosting broomsticks for a Quidditch match later in the month with Fang lazing at the doorstep of his owner's hut, watching the students playing in the distance.

The professors were glad of the weekend's reprieve of teaching, using the time to catch up on their hobbies, grading students' work or just relax with a warm cup of hot chocolate (or something stronger) in their offices.

They decided it was time to have some ice skating! The Black Lake wasn't frozen over solid enough to be dependable, so they went to the Heads of House and requested a 'favour'. Somewhat bemused, the Heads of House agreed, and then decided to add in their own ideas!

Result -- The Great Hall was sparkling with enchanted silver frost coating the walls in spectacular patterns depicting the subject matters of all which was taught at the school. Trees were in their places, and decorated to delight and bewilder. The 5 long tables, all set up in their rows and loaded with things to nibble on and with the holly and ivy on the banisters -- it all looked pretty much the same to the students as they came down for lunch, looking through the double doors. However, at the doorway were several prefects, handing out special shoes.

"These just go over your shoes. They are magically enabled to fit to your shoe with no problem."  They handed out the shoes and indicated that everyone was to sit on the benches and put them on before they entered the Great Hall.

When the students entered the room, they found that the floor itself had been enchanted to be like an ice rink. The shoes, as well as acting like ice skates, had within their charms the ability to balance whoever was wearing them. (However, the shoes also had the discernment to decrease the speed at which the wearer traveled, depending on how much they had to balance out the person in their wanderings.) Everyone, no matter what their innate natural abilities were, could skate!

After the meal, improvised races took place around the tables, zig-zagging through them, and some especially determined persons tried to leap the tables themselves (with much ensuing hilarity).

Afterwards, it was said to be one of the best feasts ever had at the castle.

Christmas was Vanessa's favorite time of year and it was almost upon HOL.  The best part was that when Vanessa woke up, she saw that it had snowed last night and was still snowing!  Snow was so much fun to play in especially with all her friends and she couldn't wait to finish breakfast and then go play in the snow!
Vanessa ran into the Ravenclaw common room and saw her friends Kendra and Gail.  "Are you guys ready to go play in the snow?" she asked excitedly!  The other girls looked happy too.  "This is going to be such a great day." Vanessa thought.
Everyone headed down to breakfast where they ran into their friends Sky and Iverian and Professor Tarma Black and Katelin Ross.  Everyone said their hellos and entered the Great Hall.  It was so beautiful!  There were numerous Christmas trees everywhere along with lots of decorations.  Vanessa's favorite tree with all lit up with candles and had a beautiful star on top.  It reminded her of when she went with her family to the Muggle village of Salem and saw the old fashioned Christmas village.  The group broke apart to go eat with their fellow houses.  Vanessa sat beside Gail while Kendra sat on Gail's other side.  The food in front of everyone looked amazing!  It was so hard to choose what to eat but Vanessa decided on chocolate chip waffles and pan fried potatoes covered in cheese.  It was delicious!
After breakfast, a lot of the students went outside to go play in the snow.  Gail, Kendra, Sky, Iverian, Katelin, and Vanessa all went outside together and built a snowman and had a snowball fight.  It was one of the happiest days Vanessa had at HOL.  "I can't wait until Christmas when I get to give everyone their presents!" Vanessa though and smiled.

There was a hush over grounds as the owls returned to the owlery from their nightly hunt. The rising sun shone brightly over the frosted trees. If you listened closely you could hear the tentacles of the Giant Squid thrashing against the layer of solid ice across the top of the Black Lake.
Many of the students had left for the Christmas holidays, relieved and joyful for this much needed break from their studies! Those who had remained were slowly waking, and then jolting awake with the remembrances of the day. It's Christmas! They rushed to put on their clothes and trot off to their presents. Jumpers, socks, sweets, and even some new games! Rounds of Gobstones, Wizard Chess, and Exploding Snap broke out in all the common rooms, until the rumbling of their tummies was too much. They headed to the Great Hall, where the work of Hagrid and the House elves was a sight to see! Ginormous pines, decorated from the lowest branches to the highest tips were surrounded by icicles while an enchanted snow gently fell from the ceiling. Once the students sat food appeared, and the Christmas feast began!

Did you know that during Christmas time, Hagrid and the other professors decorate the Great Hall with twelve Christmas trees (Harry Potter Wiki paragraph 5)? Christmas is celebrated around the world in Christian countries, and is a celebration celebrating the birth of Jesus. The Harry Potter universe has shown many different versions of Christmas, usually depending on where Harry Potter spends the holidays (he usually prefers to spend it at Hogwarts or with friends). The Harry Potter universe does a marvelous job depicting Christmas and how it is celebrated in different houses/locations. Even Hogwarts has its own traditions and customs when it comes to Christmas. Besides the twelve Christmas trees, Hogwarts also lays out presents for those staying behind at the foot of student's beds, the Great Hall is decorated to resemble a Christmas Wonderland, and there is a Christmas dinner feast for those staying behind.

There's nothing quite like the feeling of HOL in the winter time. There were some people quietly sitting around in each of the common rooms, comfortable in their warm pajamas and finishing up their last assignments for the end of the term. Out the window at pretty much any time of day,  you could see Quidditch players on the pitch practicing for their next game. Those uniforms sure do stick out against the pure white snow! There were always plenty of games to be played indoors for those who were tired of playing in the snow, and everyone loved getting together to eat, play, and enjoy some hot chocolate or cider in the Great Hall. There were even some musicians among the students who would play or sing tunes to keep everyone in the spirit of the season. Everyone felt like family, especially around this time of year, and you could feel a sense of joy from everyone that was different than any other time of the year.

The castle had a top of white from the night's snow. As no one went outside yet, the grounds and lake glistened in the bright morning light, serene and beautiful. Inside the castle, the festive and wintery spirit remained. The great hall's ceiling was charmed to have snowflakes fall, yet melt halfway down. It glittered in the light of the candles. Throughout the castle, mistletoe and gold decorations were found. Small elves, bright lights, a poofy red garland were intertwined along the Grand Staircase. It was magical.

The common rooms were just as beautiful. The Sett was decorated with a rich red and candles all around. Gold covered everything and shined from the light of the fireplace. The Dungeons, although as dark as ever, has a silver tone to them, and small bouquets of mistletoe and Christmas decorations adorned the mantelpiece and tables. The Gryffindor Common Room had festive flags reaching from one corner of the room to another. Banners proclaiming "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Years" were all along the walls creating a festive and upbeat feeling. Finally, the Roost had garlands along the walls and staircases. The bookshelves were also covered with mini tree and elf figurines.

Truly, it was a magical Christmas at HOL.
