  1. I decided to do a search for images of Road Runners (or Roadrunners) and it's such an adorable bird that I didn't want to choose just one with which to make a Jigsaw. So you all get a bunch of images, including some containing information 'about' the bird. Road Runner Jigsaw (140 pieces) Solve this Jigsaw and earn 30 Diamonds! Post your screenshot of the completed jigsaw below before the end of December, HOL time, to earn your Diamonds. Remember that all your graphics need to be 600x600 or smaller. Be sure to include the amount of time it took you to complete the puzzle as well as the number of pieces it has.
  2. Road Runners are awesome birds. The Greater Roadrunner can kill a rattlesnake, thrive in the harsh environment of the Desert Southwest of the United States of America and can outrace a human. Even at their largest, they reach around two feet from the edge of their bill (beak) to the tip of their tail. Their coloring blends in well with the desert and plants which grow there, being with a mottled plumage and just a splash of color on their blue-black crest and white at the tip of their tail. Not only do they run, but they can fly! Do some research and write more about Road Runners in here. Are they awesome or plain? What do they eat? How far can they fly? Are there different varieties of Road Runners? Is what they are called 'Roadrunner' or 'Road Runner'? Earn 25 Diamonds when you reply in here. Please be sure to have at least 150 words in your reply to get full count of Diamonds. You have until the end of December, HOL time, to earn your Diamonds.
  3. I have vague memories of watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer .... No idea when or where. I went to watch an excerpt of it, and OH, I remember that! I bet that the guy who is a snow-man has Burl Ives voice? (It's a very distinctive voice ... a la Elliot Spencer of Leverage. ) Stop-motion, animated marvel. That describes it perfectly. I really like the feeling of this; there is something 'actual' about something with stop-motion characters, put into different poses and photographed and then run together to make a moving picture. It's charming and there is a reality about it that CGI, as good as it can be, simply doesn't have. So then I found the movie online, and watched a bit of it. I'd completely forgotten about any kind of story line and was sort of happy to realize that yes, there is more to it than just oh, gee, Rudolph has a red nose and he doesn't fit into the society of reindeers and then he's redeemed because of 'red nose' and lighting the way .... Ahhhh. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Thank you, Fels!

  5. Yes, Road Runner is fascinating. He runs merrily along and Wile E. Coyote comes to all kinds of grief attempting to catch him! But what about the real 'bird'? Are they of any interest at all? Maybe they just look cute and have nothing going for them? Solve this Fallen Letters puzzle, and earn 25 Diamonds when you send me the solution in a Sett PM titled 'Wonders - Fallen Letters puzzle' on or before the end of December (HOL time). If you want to see that graphic directly, click here . To see a larger graphic of the Fallen Letters puzzle, click here . Good luck! Beep beep!
  6. This month in Wonders, we focus on Road Runners - the birds. But we're putting a slight twist on it because, yes, this week we are discussing a cartoon character which happens to BE a Road Runner. Have you ever watched the antics of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner? Or have you seen any comic strips or heard any of the variations of the musical theme of the show? If you have, what was it? Was it recently or ages (ie 1 week, 1 month, 1 year or 1 century -- yes, time is relative) ago? Did you enjoy it, find it funny? Or was it sort of 'not funny' or slow or just not interesting for you? If not, is this something which you might want to watch, or see more of? Here's an example of the cartoon -- Looney Tunes - Cartoon Do you notice how much of the attention, at least on this one cartoon, seems to be on Wile E. Coyote? 7. Road Runner! Does anyone read those words and the tune (or a variation of it as it changed through the years) start to play in your head? (Roadrunner Original Theme or here is a Roadrunner Theme Variation) Road Runner, or, more formally, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, have been around for ages. They were first featured in 1949 in a theatrical cartoon short called Fast and Furry-ous. Created in 1948 for Warner Brothers by animation director Chuck Jones and writer Michael Maltese, they starred in a long list of theatrical cartoon shorts (with Maltese creating the first 16 adventures), and sometimes they showed up in made-for-television cartoons. While it might be that Jones and Maltese meant to emulate the success of Tom and Jerry, they came into their own, and stay there. New projects are still being made staring this duo -- and they are referred to in many and various artistic endeavours, including movies, graphic cartoons and music. Here's a Jigsaw for you to solve! 8. I swear I didn't do this on purpose! I was investigating the diet of December's 'creature' and oh oh ....... In December we are exploring a most fascinating creature -- fascinating both because it's wonderful but because there has been a television show featuring him and the words "Beep beep!" are recognized all over the world as belong to him. Yes, December belongs to ............................................................................ Road Runners
  9. Thank you, Sirius. This was very strangely fascinating! I will definitely be looking at ants with a different perspective now.
  10. 2. What have you learned from the whole month's activities on ants? Any information added? What other trivia you could add about ants that others can learn? One of the most interesting things I've learned is that when an image of an ant is blown up to the scale that one can easily see it, and imagine it to be the size of a small dog, or even maybe a horse, it's alarming in appearance! Why is this? I remember finishing that one jigsaw puzzle and looking at it and all my hackles went up! An interesting fact that I found is, not only are they potentially long-lived, like Janne wrote, but they've been around on the planet for a long, long time. How long? Does the Jurassic Era seem like a long time ago? According to some researchers, ants first showed up between 140-168 million years ago. This is roughly the Jurassic period -- . . when dinosaurs roamed around. The plant life then was mostly plants like ferns and pines (cone- and spore-bearing species).
  11. Hi Viviana and Rory! Eagles and Snakes, visiting Badgers How lovely! Pull up a beanbag, grab some hot cocoa and maybe a blueberry muffin, and make yourself at home. Welcome!
  12. I'd be a worker ant most likely. That's something which feels good to me, to keep things going, to wander out and gather foods, to make things tidy. Guarding my mates, all that, seems to be a good choice. However, I find that I might 'raise the eyebrows' a bit, not intentionally but it just happens, in the way I approach things, and get things done. There is sometimes an eclectic approach in my methodology.
