  1. #1 - Say It Right #2 - Nelly was named after Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim, who won five gold and one silver Olympic medals.
  2. Despite the breed having origins centuries before, in the 16th century, an official society to safeguard the Connemara Pony wasn't established until 1923. There were concerns that the bloodline may become too diluted due to additional cross-breeding with Arabian blood in the 1700s and subsequent cross-breeding with Hackneys and Thoroughbreds, according to the society's history. The Connemara Pony Breeders' Society was established in 1923 as a result. Thirty local men founded the Clifden, County Galway-based Society with the goal of safeguarding and advancing the breed. The Society published the Connemara Pony Stud Book in 1926 to officially recognize it. These lovely ponies can now be found around the world, as their work ethic and sensibility put them in high demand. Today, Connemara ponies are bred in Ireland, the UK, across Europe, in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
  3. I've first heard of a mongoose in the TV show Hannibal. Dr. Lecter is talking about/to Will and says something to the effect of 'the mongoose I want under the house when the snakes slither by'. I always found it quite peculiar as I wasn't familiar with the animal and wasn't sure what its purpose was. I googled it and found a rather adorable-looking thing. It certainly didn't look like something that killed snakes. After I found what they're all about, it kind of fits. While the snakes, cobras especially, are quite venomous, slithery, and predatory and I think they can be taller than a mongoose if they rear up, the mongoose still has some advantages. They're very fast, have a certain level of resistance to the venom, and are very powerful, which can crush a snake's skull. They also have very powerful senses, especially smell. It doesn't look like a mongoose should even have a fighting chance against a snake, but looks can be deceiving. It was interesting to research this in detail.
  4. I've never much liked The Jungle Book, not really sure why the story hasn't drawn me in as some of the others. I did like all the animals, especially Bagheera. I don't mind snakes all that much, I'm not particularly afraid of them. We had a small, non-dangerous snake, at school and it often came out of its habitat for show and tell. I usually had her around my neck and arms. Living with dangerous snakes though, that a whole other beast. I sometimes read about what Australians have to do, especially those living out of cities, to make sure snakes or other dangerous crawlies don't bite them. I don't think I could manage all that. I like Rikki Tikki Tavi and what he does about the cobra. Though it is a shame it's needed at all. Cobras are part of the animal kingdom as well. I think I liked the chant at the end the best, though. It's a very lovely (if a little bit early) tribute to the brave mongoose.
  5. I...didn't expect that. Thought someone else for sure would get it. I loved this game! I think this is the shiny 'award' I'm most proud of in my collection. Can we play again soon?
